On first reading of John chapter 11, Jesus was anxious to raise Lazarus because he was the brother of his very close friends, Martha and Mary (it was that Mary who had anointed Jesus with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair). He also hoped that by seeing, they would believe that he had been sent by God.However, no other gospel mentions this, the greatest miracle performed by Jesus. Luke does mention the sisters Mary and Martha, but they are unrelated to Lazarus, who is only mentioned in Luke's Gospel in a parable about death and resurrection. Scholars say that John's Gospel was inspired by Luke's Gospel, so it can be assumed that its story of Mary, Martha and Lazarus was also inspired by that in Luke, where there was only a hypothetical resurrection of Lazarus. The question then become, why did the author of John's Gospel write of Jesus raising Lazarus. Part of the answer is certainly in verse 11:42 - by reading the story of Jesus raising Lazarus, people will believe that he was sent by God.
